TSOOL doing work on Andy Bell’s solo album

Following Oasis’ 10-month world tour, bassist Andy Bell has began work on his first solo album. The Welsh-born, ex-Ride and Hurricane #1 guitarist is recording the album in Sweden, where he has lived for the past 8 years with his wife, Idha.

He has enlisted the help of Kalle Gustafsson Jerneholm from the Swedish rock group, The Soundtrack of Our Lives to produce the record.

We sat down with Bell in Gothenburg, Sweden to talk about the new album.

SV Music Magazine: Andy, at what point did you decide that it was time for a solo album?

AB: Well, we (Oasis) just finished a 10-month world tour at the end of March, and Noel (Gallagher) made it quite clear that he had no further plans for the band in 2006. I also had quite a few songs left over from our last album.

I’ve always wanted to record a solo album ever since Ride disbanded, and for the first time, I’ve had the time ? and the songs ? to finally start it.

SV: Speaking of Oasis, you wrote two songs for ?Don’t Believe The Truth?. Do you feel more comfortable presenting material to the rest of the band now than you did when you first joined?

AB: To be honest, I’ve always felt quite comfortable bringing my songs to Noel and the rest of the group. I’ve just been writing more in the last couple of years than I did when I first joined. I only wrote two songs for the ‘Heathen Chemistry’ sessions (Thank You For The Good Times, and A Quick Peep).

This time around, I had about 7 or 8 songs, and two went on the record. (Turn Up The Sun, and Keep The Dream Alive).

SV: Tell us about what kind of material we can expect from the solo record. Do the tunes have an Oasis vibe to them?

AB: Well, I would say that they are more similar to the songs I was writing for Ride and Hurricane than the songs I’ve written for Oasis in the last few years.

I think that there is a good mix of songs on the album. There are some heavier songs, some softer tunes, and a couple of psychedelic offerings. I’m very excited.

SV: How did you and Kalle begin working with each other?

AB: We toured with TSOOL back in 2002, and they also opened a couple of gigs for us this past summer. I’m a big fan of TSOOL. Kalle has done quite a lot of production and mixing for TSOOL along with some other bands. He’s a genius at layering sounds in the studio, and his style is working very well right now with this record.

We talked after a show we played with TSOOL last summer in Milton Keynes (England), and we decided that we would get together once Oasis was finished touring.

TSOOL is doing some touring of its own this year, but with us both living in Sweden, it’s been quite easy to schedule recording sessions at Kalle’s studio (Grammofonstudion in Gothenburg).

SV: Are there any other musicians who are going to appear on your record?

AB: Actually, Gem (guitarist in Oasis) was on holiday in Iceland last month, and stopped by in Sweden for a few days to play on some tracks. I also had Pete Salisbury (former drummer for The Verve) come in to play drums on a few songs.

Also, Martin Hederos, Matthias Barjed, and Ebbot Lundberg from TSOOL are all planning on coming in for a couple sessions.

SV: Any chance of Noel and Liam performing on the album?

AB: There is a song I’ve written called ‘In The Middle’ which I think would suit Liam’s voice very well. I don’t think Noel even wants to look at a guitar for the next 6 months, let alone come to Sweden to play one. (Laughing).

SV: When do you expect to release the album?

AB: We will start mixing at the end of the summer, and hopefully have the record out by the end of November.
