Liam Gallagher: “Oasis split is the best thing ever”

Plus singer declares he only wants cool people to wear his Pretty Green clothes

Liam Gallagher has declared that Oasis’ split is the “best thing that’s ever happened”, after realising it has given him more freedom.

The singer, who is currently promoting his Pretty Green clothing label in the US, told the New York Times he is now relishing his post-Oasis career after initally being “gutted” about the break-up.

“In hindsight it was the best thing that’s ever happened, because we’re free to do whatever we want,” said Gallagher, who confirmed in the interview he has not spoken to his brother and former bandmate Noel since the break-up last August.

Meanwhile, Gallagher, who recently announced his new band would be called Beady Eye, bemoaned the lack of snappy dressers around at the moment.

He said: “Not a lot of people look cool these days, like my cool. Everybody plays it down, don’t they?”

And he added that he only wanted those who were cool enough to wear his Pretty Green clothes.

“I don’t want just anybody wearing it,” said the singer. “And people go, ‘Oh, beggars can’t be choosers.’ Well, I ain’t a beggar, you know what I mean?”

Meanwhile, Pretty Green recently recruited Paul Weller to design clothes for the label.

Gem performs with Paul Weller

As many of you may already know, the Modfather Paul Weller picked up the Godlike Genius Award at last week’s NME Awards. No argument from us; the guy is a legend. No one would agree with us more than Noel and Gem.

Noel recorded a special message for the awards and Gem was asked by Paul to join him on stage to perform as part of his band playing guitar and providing backing vocals.

If you’re not in the UK or didn’t catch the TV broadcast you may have missed the guys so we decided we’d go trawling the interwebs to find you the footage:

HERE’s Noel talking about Paul (approximately 3’20″ in).

And a little later on in the same video Gem performs ‘Start’ and ‘Eton Rifles’ with Weller.

Gem also performed with Paul at his performance at the Haiti Benefit at The Roundhouse on the 25th February. To donate to the charity or find out more about their work, click HERE!

And while we’re on the subject, Gem is not only a killer guitar player he also enjoys dabbling in graphic design and made up an exclusive art print for us. You can check that out HERE!

Paul Weller on Oasis split: “I’d work with both Liam and Noel Gallagher”

Modfather says he’s not picking sides

Paul Weller has said that he believes that Oasis splitting has been a good thing – and told NME.COM that he would be happy to work with both Noel and Liam Gallagher.

The Jam’s former frontman said that he liked both the Gallaghers “equally” and would not pick sides because of the split.

“Creatively, I think the Oasis split is going to be good thing,” he said. “There’s going to be some great things to come from both of them in the future. I’d definitely be up for collaborating with Liam and with Noel. I love them both equally, and think they’re both extremely talented in their own ways.”

Weller is set to return with his own album in the spring which features contributions from My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields. He will also play a residency at London’s Royal Albert Hall in April.

Oasis’ Noel Gallagher: “I’m average at guitar”

Noel says he’s not that great – and Paul Weller agrees

Oasis’ Noel Gallagher has said that when compared to guitar greats such as Johnny Marr and Paul Weller he is “average” at playing the instrument.

The star made the comments in an interview with Total Guitar magazine – with Weller adding that he agreed with the statement.

Speaking of his ability, Gallagher said: “It facilitates what I do in Oasis, know what I mean? I’m unfortunate enough that two of my best mates are Johnny Marr of The Smiths and Paul Weller. Those two are virtuosos to me, although neither of them would admit it. On the electric guitar they’re it. So if you’re asking me how do I compare to those two – and I like to compare myself to the greats – I’m average at fucking best.”

Responding to the comments, Weller said, “Bless him, but his playing is rudimentary. But Noel doesn’t pretend to be a guitar god. He’s very good at putting chords together and he’s got a distinctive style in terms of his chord sequences and his rhythm playing. It’s recognisable, I suppose.”

Did Oasis V Festival attack spoil star collaboration?

Rumoured Paul Weller spot dropped after Noel assault

A strongly-rumoured collaboration between Oasis and Paul Weller at the Canadian V Festival may have been ruined by the onstage assault on Noel Gallagher on Sunday (September 7).

The guitarist was pushed to the ground by an intruder during his band’s set, forcing the group to leave the stage for nearly ten minutes.

Although Oasis returned to finish the show, according to a statement the guitarist was later “taken to hospital after the show to be examined for a suspected fractured rib and ligament damage. The assailant was detained in police custody and will be charged with assault”.

However, according to a source at the festival, Weller – who was also on the bill – had been due to join the band on ‘Champagne Supernova’, a track he originally guested on when it appeared on the band’s 1995 album ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory?’.

“There was a rumour going around the festival that Weller was going to play the solo on the song, like he does on record, all day,” the source told NME.COM. “However, just before the band played their last song they all huddled together, there was a bit of a discussion and then they launched into set closer ‘I Am The Walrus’.

“Afterwards, there was talk that the band had to cut the song due to time, and that meant no Weller.”

Whether Weller was due to guest or not, suggestions that the song was cut do appear to be backed up by the fact that when Oasis kicked off their world tour in Seattle ‘Champagne Supernova’ was the song that immediately preceded the set closer.

Weller enlists Oasis frontman for new album

Paul Weller has teamed up with Noel Gallagher for his new album.

Although the legendary ‘Wild Wood’ singer asked Oasis frontman Gallagher and the band’s guitarist Gem Archer to record material for his forthcoming LP, the trio spent a lot of their time drinking.

A source told Britain’s The Sun newspaper: “Noel and Gem have spent time at Weller’s studio. Most sessions end in serious alcohol-fuelled arguments. But the music has been brilliant. Weller put his name on the writing credits first with Noel and Gem – even though he spent most of the session getting the beers in. That’s the bonus of being 50 – and the boss!”

Weller recently revealed he was looking forward to the album as he felt it would contain some of his best songs.

He said: “There are rock’n'roll tunes on there. There are soul and R’n'B type tunes. A few psychedelic instrumentals – all the things I’m into.”

This is not the first time Gallagher and Weller have worked together.

Last year they teamed up at London’s Royal Albert Hall for the annual Teenage Cancer Trust Concert.
