Oasis’ Noel Gallagher wants to write the next ‘James Bond’ theme

Read a free extract from NME’s exclusive cover story

Noel Gallagher has told NME that he’s got more spare songs than he knows what to do with, and would like some of them to be used as the next James Bond theme.

Oasis speak about their new album ‘Dig Out Your Soul’, knife crime and what they’d do if they were Mayor of London, in an exclusive cover story in this week’s NME.

Now check out an exclusive free extract from the interview on NME.COM, then get your copy on UK newsstands now.

[...] The songs are coming quickly, with three of Noel’s – ‘The Shock Of The Lightning’, ‘Falling Down’ and another newie ‘Come On, It’s Alright’ – being written in a matter of days. In fact, he’s now got “a backlog of thirty-odd songs, just sitting there”.

“I don’t know what the fuck I’m going to do with them all,” he sighs. “Could I give them to someone else to sing? Well, there’s a few that sound like girls could sing them, you know? But who? Fucking Amy Winehouse? She’ll be dead before I write another one. That Duffy’s alright. I might do them for a film, but I don’t want them to be stuck in divvy romantic comedies.”

How about a Bond theme? Jack White’s just done one.

“It’s a bit of a piss-take that the greatest British agent of all time has to be soundtracked by a bunch of fucking Americans. But yep, I’ve written a couple of Bond theme tunes.”

Really? What are they called?

“Er, they haven’t got very Bond-esque titles, so I would have to tailor the title accordingly. The latest one that I wrote, I listened back to it thinking, ‘fucking hell man! That’d make a fucking great Bond theme’. But it’s called ‘Freaky Teeth’. Now, unless there’s a James Bond film that comes out in the next ten years that’s very, very psychedelic…”

Or they could bring Jaws back…

“Yeah! I dunno, I would never write a song called ‘A Different Way To Die’ or ‘Die Another Day’, there’s always something about death, isn’t there?”

Maybe you could do ‘Live Forever’.

“I could, but I’d have to re-record it. Getting back to the point, I have no idea what I’ll do with these songs.” [...]

A lucky winner will be personally chosen by the band and will win a unique VIP experience to the Oasis gig of their choice anywhere in the world, including travel and accommodation.

Conor McNicholas, NME Editor said: “We are ecstatic that NME has been able to work with Oasis to give our readers the very first taste of ‘Dig Out Your Soul’. The songbook really does mark a world first in including fans in the excitement of a new album release. With Arts Council England on board helping kids pick up instruments, this covermount could inspire and enable a new generation of Gallaghers right across the country.”

The Oasis ‘NME Dig Out Your Soul Songbook’ is backed by the Arts Council England’s Take it away scheme which has given out £6m worth of interest free loans to budding musicians over the last 12 months.

Mary-Alice Stack, who manages Take it Away at Arts Council England, said:

“Take it away is about helping people to get started learning and playing musical instruments of all kinds. We’re delighted to be involved with this songbook and competition, because we’re sure it will do just that. Along with aspiring Noels and Liams, we hope that the opportunity to perform these songs might well turn up a would-be Vanessa Mae or Seth Lakeman for the next generation.”

Noel Gallagher: “Somewhat predictably our new single is brilliant”

Oasis leader speaks about ‘Lord Don’t Slow Me Down’

Noel Gallagher has spoken following news that Oasis will be releasing a brand new single in October.

NME.COM has full details of ‘Lord Don’t Slow Me Down’s release online now.

Appearing this morning (September 24) on Radio 1 with DJ Chris Moyles, the guitarist spoke about the new release, quipping that “it’s coming out on that internet”.

Sharing the band’s inspiration for the online release, he explained: “You know there’s a DVD coming out for Christmas… somewhat predictably. The title track was so brilliant that the powers that be said ‘lets just put it out’. And I’m like, ‘well we’re not ready to do that yet’. So, it was decided it would be a nice thing to put it out for those people who have computers.”

Joking about his lack of technological prowess, he stated: “I’m not one of those people, so it’s a good job I get my own copy of it, because I wouldn’t get it otherwise. I’ve got an iPod, but Gem sorts all that out for me. That’s filth, y’know?”

Meanwhile the Oasis leader also spoke about the birth of his second child, a son, at the weekend (September 22).

After Moyles congratulated him, Gallagher joked: “What? for being third in the league?” – referring to the impressive start to the season his football team Manchester City have made – before explaining he was there for the birth.

“I was there,” he explained. “It was alright for me, my missus was giving me a bit of stick afterwards, saying, ‘you never took your jacket off all the way through!’ I was just in my leather jacket, nodding ‘you’ll be alright, just get it out before Soccer AM finishes’. I think the worst thing is that you don’t have any specific role [as a father at the birth]. You just stand there and nod.”

He added that he had named the boy Donovan Rory Gallagher after “his granddad Rory”.

Gallagher added: “He’s called Donovan. Sounds like a man who means business already.”

For more exclusive information on Oasis’ single release get this week’s issue of NME, on newsstands from September 26.

Noel Gallagher: “Solo album is coming”

The Oasis man tells NME about all his recording plans

Oasis mainman Noel Gallagher has confirmed that he already has song earmarked for a solo album.

Speaking in the new issue of NME, Gallagher said that following his recent solo concert appearances he was making tentative steps towards a solo project.

He said: “I’ve actually got a backlog of songs that are slowly building up. The thing about a solo record is the time to do one is between Oasis world tours because you’d have a good couple of years.

“But it takes me so long to write the songs that eventually I run out of time (before Oasis begins again), but I’ve got a backlog now of about four or five songs which are probably too far in the past as far as the band in concerned, but which could work on my record… it’s coming.”

Gallagher also said that Oasis have already written most of the follow up to 2005′s ‘Don’t Believe The Truth’.

He explained: “The next one in theory is already fucking written. I’ve got eight songs that I’m pretty happy with. I think Liam’s got one or two that he thinks are brilliant. We’re waiting for Gem and Andy. It’s just a case of sitting down and saying, ‘When do we want to do this?’”

Also in this week’s NME there’s the definitive review of Arctic Monkeys’ second album as we run the rule over ‘Favourite Worst Nightmare’. There’s also an exclusive look at The White Stripes’ new image, and Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst talks about his infamous John Peel comments at the last Glastonbury.

Plus, get the My Chemical Romance Black Parade UK Tour poster special.
