Cristiano Ronaldo: Oasis are better than The Beatles

Former Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo has given his verdict on British music, and according to him, Oasis trounce The Beatles. Liverpool have The Beatles and Manchester have Oasis,” he said. “I think we [Manchester] have the better band.”

The Portuguese star says he owns every Oasis album, with his favourite track being ‘Champagne Supernova‘ (“It’s an absolute classic,” he said), despite never having heard of the band when he first moved to the city. “I will be honest, I didn’t even know who they were when I first arrived in Manchester, but you can’t live there long without knowing who they are.”

He added that he had never met the Gallagher brothers, though he had seen them around Manchester. “I saw them around town a couple of times but never spoke to them. They didn’t look that approachable but sometimes these artistic types are like that.”

Pah… manche Leute!»

Oasis forced to abandon Manchester Heaton Park stage

Boos as technical difficulties cause delays

Oasis were forced to abandon the stage twice at their huge headline show at Manchester’s Heaton Park tonight (June 4) due to technical difficulties.

Liam and Noel Gallagher and co left the stage while generator problems were fixed, once during their opening song then during the second number. They then returned to play a full live set during which they vowed to give full refunds to the 70,000 fans in attendance.

At around 9pm (BST) following support slots from Twisted Wheel, Reverend And The Makers (standing in for The Enemy, who cancelled due to frontman Tom Clarke falling ill) and Kasabian the band began their set with ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Star’.

The song was stopped due to sound problems. The band headed off stage for around ten minutes to the sound of boos from the crowd.

They then returned and began to play ‘Lyla’ – although that song was cut short due to further sound troubles.

The band left the stage again, while a message appeared on the stage screens declaring that the problems would be fixed as soon as technical staff could sort them out.

The message explained that generator failure was causing the issues, while smoke could be seen emanating from the equipment. It was then updated to say “Almost there!”.

Oasis returned to the stage after around 40 minutes to successfully kick-start the set again with ‘The Shock Of The Lightning’ and ‘Cigarettes And Alcohol’, with the Gallaghers promising to give fans their money back.

“Really sorry about that,” Liam Gallagher told the crowd. “This is a free gig now. Everyone will get a refund.”

His brother Noel added: “The curfew’s 11, but we’ll play ’til they kick us off. Keep your ticket and you’ll get your money back.”

Later in the set, however, the logistics of the promised refunds seemed to trouble Noel. “We’re not sure how its gonna work with getting the money back,” he said before playing ‘Half The World’. “Be on a website or summat. We’re not getting paid for this so buy a t-shirt on the way out. Credit crunch and that, keep my kids in sweets. If you’re getting your mum and dad to pick you up outside afterwards, tell we’re not leaving til 2am. Kind of regret offering you your money back now. Apply for it back if you wanna be a cunt, we do our best for you.”

The band played a 24-song set, ending with their customary cover of The Beatles’ ‘I Am The Walrus’ at 11:20pm.

Oasis played:

‘Fuckin’ In The Bushes’
‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Star’
‘Lyla’
‘The Shock Of The Lightning’
‘Roll With It’
‘Cigarettes And Alcohol’
‘The Meaning Of Soul’
‘To Be Where There’s Life’
‘Waiting For The Rapture’
‘The Masterplan’
‘Songbird’
‘Slide Away’
‘Morning Glory’
‘My Big Mouth’
‘The Importance Of Being Idle’
‘Half The World’
‘I’m Outta Time’
‘Wonderwall’
‘Live Forever’
‘Supersonic’
‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’
‘Fallin’ Down’
‘Champagne Supernova’
‘I Am The Walrus’

They are set to play Heaton Park again on Saturday (June 6) and Sunday (7).

Bonehead: ‘Oasis should have quit after Knebworth’

Departed guitarist speaks about band’s legacy

Former Oasis guitarist Paul ‘Bonehead’ Arthurs has said that he believes the band should have quit after they played their two shows at Knebworth in 1996.

The Manchester band played in front of a combined audience of 250,000 at the two huge outdoor shows on August 10 and 11 that year – with Bonehead (who was still in the band at the time) saying it would have been a suitable point to end their career.

“I always thought we should have bowed out at Knebworth,” he told the Guardian G2. “Walking out on that stage is a feeling I can’t explain: a sea of people. Big!”

Speaking about why he left the band in 1999, he added: “It was the best job in the world but by the time we recorded [1999 album] ‘Standing On The Shoulder of Giants’ it wasn’t enjoyable. My daughter was two days old and I was jumping on a flight. We’d made our money. We had big cars. We were renting out Christian Dior’s mansion in France. That should have been fun, but it wasn’t. Liam [Gallagher, singer] was on a drinking ban and I wasn’t helping by not sticking to it. [Liam's brother, guitarist] Noel had his own problems.”

Arthurs said he would not re-join the band, but would be interested in playing with them live.

“I’d never rejoin them,” he asserted. “Not that I’d be asked. But for one gig? Absolutely. I still know the chords to ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Star’.”

Oasis are set to kick off a series of three gigs at Manchester’s Heaton Park on Thursday (June 4), with Liam Gallagher recently saying he hoped they would surpass Knebworth in terms of quality.

Oasis honoured with bus tour exploring history of Noel and Liam Gallagher’s band

Oasis have been honoured with a music tour exploring the history of the Manchester band formed by Noel and Liam Gallagher.

Noel & Liam Gallagher

Noel & Liam Gallagher

For £10-a-head, fans can be guided around landmarks in the life of Burnage’s most famous sons.

Sights on the two-and-a-half-hour tour include where the brothers went to school, where they first rehearsed together as a band and the record shop where they bought singles from.

The bus tour was the idea of Inspiral Carpets drummer Craig Gill who already runs a series of Manchester Music bus and walking tours alongside music expert Phill Gatenby revealing famous locations in the history of bands including Joy Division and The Smiths.

Mr Gill already knows Noel from the days he was just a budding musician who ended up becoming a roadie for the Inspirals after failing to win a place as the band’s singer.

The band, originally called The Rain, even re-named themselves Oasis after seeing the name on a poster of Inspiral Carpets’ tour venues.

Mr Gill said: “I first met Noel when he came up to me in the Hacienda and told me he was a fan of the Inspirals and gave me a cassette of him playing acoustic guitar. He was still working for the gas board back then. When our singer left in 1988, we asked him to come for an audition but we were after something really specific, so to break it gently to him we asked him to come and be our roadie, but he became more or less the sixth member of the band. But then he joined up with his brother and formed Oasis.”

The tour will launch on June 6 ahead of the band’s huge Heaton Park gigs, but is available for private bookings before then.

The tour includes perhaps the most famous fan landmark – Sifters Record Shop in Didsbury – where the lads used to buy singles, and credited in Oasis’s 1994 song Shakermaker with: “Mister Sifter sold me songs, When I was just 16.”
