Liam Gallagher: “Oasis split has helped Manchester City”

Singer thinks the band and football club’s fortunes are linked

Liam Gallagher has joked that the fortunes of Oasis and his beloved Manchester City football team are linked.

The singer pointed out that the team seemed to do badly when the band were at their peak – and now that Oasis have split things look much better on the pitch.

“When Oasis were doing well, City were doing shit,” Gallagher told the Daily Mirror. “But now we’ve split, City are doing good. Maybe there’s some good times ahead with City, and that’ll take the pain of the band splitting off a bit.”

Manchester City romped to a 4-2 away win against Chelsea on Saturday (February 27), while Gallagher is expected to make his musical comeback with former Oasis members later this year.

Liam Gallagher vs Tottenham Hotspur

Oasis’ Liam Gallagher laid into Tottenham Hotspur supporters at White Hart Lane on Saturday (May 16), as the team played his beloved Manchester City.

Spurs fans infuriated the Oasis singer by chanting “You’re just a shit Chas & Dave” at him early on in the match. In response Gallagher, who was watching the game from an executive box alongside his elder brother Paul, taunted the home supporters by flicking his middle finger and V-signs at them, forcing the club’s security step in and force him back to his seat.

The Spurs fans had the last laugh though, beating Man City 2-1 on the day.

Doves beat Oasis to record Man City song

The Doves have beaten Oasis for the rights to record a Manchester City anthem.

Noel and Liam Gallagher, who have performed at City’s former stadium Maine Road and current home Eastlands, are believed to have been sounded out about doing a version of club song Blue Moon.

But fellow Manchester rockers Doves’ nipped in and their version which was to be played before the match with Aston Villa last night.

Doves singer Jimi Goodwin said: “I’ll occasionally hear, ‘All right Jimi,’ but it’s not like Noel and Liam when they go to a game. We just haven’t got that kind of profile.”

And drummer Andy Williams told The Sun: “It’s going to be interesting to see how it goes down. It was flattering to be asked and I hope the City fans like it.”

Noel Gallagher admits to football hooligan past

Oasis man says he was part of a Man City ‘firm’

Noel Gallagher has said he used to hang around with members of some of Manchester City’s most notorious football hooligan firms before he signed a record deal.

The star, who was a regular on the Kippax Stand at City’s old Maine Road ground in his youth, said he still keeps in touch with some of the firm members now, reports The Sun.

“I knew all that lot and I still see a few of them today,” he said. “They were quite mad times. Half of us were on the dole.”

Man City hooligan groups The Guv’nors and The Maine Line Service Crew were some of the most notorious and feared firms in the UK during the ’80s.

The Oasis guitarist said he regularly used to wonder if he would get home without injuries after matches.

“The grounds we used to go to 20 years ago were dangerous, especially night games at Leeds and places like that, and wondering whether or not you’d make it home in one piece,” he said

Gallagher also admitted that he tried to start his own chants at Maine Road on several occasions, which he now attributes as being his first dalliance with songwriting.

“I did start a song in the Kippax when I’d had a drink,” said the guitarist. “Probably something like, ‘Everywhere We Go’ or similar and everyone joined in. So maybe the first seeds of my songwriting career were sown at the back of the Kippax.”

Oasis’ Noel Gallagher slams Man City Sven Goran Erikson ‘sacking’

Gallagher urges Eriksson to ‘take them to the cleaners’

Oasis’ Noel Gallagher has slammed Manchester City FC owner Thaksin Shinawatra for his apparent plan to sack the club’s current manager, Sven-Goran Eriksson.

Gallagher an avid City fan, said that sacking the manager, which Shinawatra is expected to do soon, would be against all the wishes of Manchester City fans.

Speaking to BBC Radio Five Live Gallagher said:

“To get rid of him [Eriksson] after the best season I can remember is ridiculous. It can’t be for any footballing reasons. For a club that’s been going nowhere fast for the last 25 years, with a manager who’s the best out there bar Jose Mourinho… he turned it around and gave us a bit of style and dignity and grace. He bought some great players. The fans have got pride back in the club… I just think it’s beyond a joke. We’ve got a manager who’s got style. If the owner thought they could come in and qualify for the Champions League straight away then he’s tripping. It’d be like sacking David Moyes at Everton or Martin O’Neill at Aston Villa because they didn’t qualify. It takes more than one season. Eriksson is a graceful and dignified man. This guy Shinawatra has come in and he seems like a bit of a nutcase. The only thing that will get him off the hook is if he’s got Mourinho lined up. Apart from Mourinho Eriksson’s the best thing out there. I’d be amazed and appalled if I met a City fan who thought getting rid of Eriksson was a good thing. They all love him up there. I’d give him a big kiss and say, ‘You know what, you take them to the cleaners.’”

Gallagher brothers happy with Eriksson’s performance

Noel and Liam Gallagher of the rock band Oasis are all praise for Sven-Goran Eriksson, the Manchester City manager, for transforming their football team this season.

«Sven’s a legend», Liam was quoted as saying by Thesun.co.uk. And Noel added: «I think history will see he was a good manager for England and it was the players who weren’t up to standard. I love him, though. He’s a ladies’ man, isn’t he? He looks like Mr. Burns from ‘The Simpsons’.»

Liam chipped in: «He’s Swedish though. They’re always up to something. I never thought I’d kiss his head but when I see him, I’m gonna kiss his bald little head.»

Call her misleading Meg

SO MEG MATHEWS is touting her second-hand gear on t’internet, claiming it’s all genuine OASIS memorabilia. I hear otherwise. Word reaches me that all the garish furniture touted by NOEL GALLAGHER’s ex is from after their divorce. But when flogging old sticks, it helps to stick an Oasis price tag on.

Better news for Noel and the lads is that Man City chairman Thaksin Shinawatra is offering them £100,000 for a gig.

Better than watching City play, I reckon.

“It’s pure City” says Noel

CITY’S takeover troubles are worrying every Blues fan bar one . . . Oasis frontman Noel Gallagher, who insists: “I’m loving it.”

The Burnage-raised singer-songwriter says that Thaksin Shinawatra’s takeover is never going to happen, and even joked about making a bid for the club himself with legendary Manchester DJ Mike Pickering.

Gallagher, a lifelong City fan, now believes the club are going to miss out on a top-class manager, and end up with a “Mickey Mouse” boss, as well as risk losing their best players.

And he also defended Joey Barton, even though the midfielder is demanding a £300,000 loyalty payment from the Blues as he tries to complete a move to Newcastle.

Gallagher has been watching developments at City following the Thai government’s decision to seize £830m of Shinawatra’s fortune.

The Oasis frontman said: “This takeover is never going to happen now, because the government has had his bank accounts frozen. It’s pure Man City. I’m loving it. The fixture list comes out on Thursday, we haven’t got a manager, we’ve only got half a team and we haven’t sold any season tickets. It’s brilliant. I’m thinking of mounting a hostile takeover – me and Mike Pickering. I reckon we could scrape together about £400,000 in cash. I reckon we would get it for that.”

Depends

Gallagher believes that City have already missed out on the best possible replacement for Stuart Pearce . . . and it wasn’t Claudio Ranieri.

He said: “In the dugout, I would like to have seen Sam Allardyce, but he went to Newcastle. It depends who’s available now. It would be good if they got a foreign coach. But it all depends on the takeover. If there’s no takeover, we’ll get Neil Warnock.”

Gallagher added that City will miss midfielder Barton’s influence next season, and argued that the controversial 24-year-old has been unfairly criticised.

“He’s a good lad, Joey. He’s a friend of mine,” Gallagher said.

“He gets a bad rap. But when you meet him, he’s a really nice lad. It’s good for him that he’s moving to Newcastle. But I’m sad to see him go because he’s our best player. I was sad to lose Sylvain Distin. He was another of our best players. At least we haven’t lost Richard Dunne yet but he’ll be out of the door soon.”

Blue Noel is Gooner be a red

AVID Man City fan NOEL GALLAGHER has revealed he’s a closet Arsenal supporter.

The OASIS guitarist wants to become a regular at Arsenal games – but only to prevent his daughter ANAIS from becoming a Man Utd fan.

Noel said: “I don’t want her growing up to be one of them Cockney Reds. She’s going to be a Gooner whether she likes it or not as she’s growing up in London. They’re a fantastic team and they play great football. Being a Man City fan it also gives me the chance to see some success for a change. But I’m in a difficult situation. I can’t turn up at Highbury at the moment because everyone knows I’m City.”

Noel and brother LIAM are the country’s biggest celebrity City fans and famously played at the club’s old Maine Road ground in 1996.
