No maybe, Oasis definitely love Glasvegas

Liam Tunes In To Scots Soundcheck

SCOTS rockers Glasvegas have added Oasis to their ever-growing list of celebrity followers.

The band, whose high-profile fans include Lisa Marie Presley, Fran Healy and Michael Stipe, played alongside the Manchester legends at the BBC’s Electric Proms on Sunday night.

And singer James Allan excitedly told how his hero Liam Gallagher turned up early to watch their soundcheck earlier in the day.

James said: “We were on stage in the afternoon going through our songs and Liam was watching it all. It was a strange feeling. I learned music through Oasis. When I was younger, seeing Oasis made me think I could do that. The first song I learned to play on guitar was Talk Tonight. And maybe without that we wouldn’t be here.”

The televised concert at London’s Roundhouse was the hottest ticket in town with more than 1000 people trying to get in long after the gig had sold out.

And as Glasvegas opened the show, James Bond actor Daniel Craig and comedian Russell Brand were also spotted in the crowd.

It’s been a huge year for the Glaswegian band. Their self-titled debut album shot straight to No.2 and they are preparing to re-release it with a new Christmas special CD, which includes carol Silent Night and their own song A Snowflake Fell (And It Felt Like A Kiss).

Last year, they scooped the Philip Hall Radar Award at the prestigious NME Awards, and, earlier this month, they took over a church in Transylvania and teamed up with a choir for their Christmas epics.

James said: “It was a great experience. It’s a beautiful place, quite gothic and working with the choir was a new experience. Recording Silent Night was my idea, too. I just told the others I wanted to do it and we did.”

And despite rumours that James is to quit the band, he confirmed they had a string of live dates in the diary following on from Sunday’s sensational set with Oasis.

Glasvegas had prime position watching Oasis perform. They had a private area in the balcony a few feet above their heroes and saw them deliver a 90-minute set backed up by a London choir.

The 50 extra singers added power behind Liam and Noel Gallagher’s voices and the finale, a cover of the Beatles’ I Am The Walrus, was a the perfect conclusion to the five-night BBC music extravaganza.

Even jokes at the expense of Daniel Craig added warmth to the event. From the stage, Noel called up to the actor: “Get me the next Bond theme tune instead of dozy Americans.” At the end of the night, an ecstatic James said: “The whole day has been brilliant. Watching Oasis was great and I still have to think how much everything has changed for us this year.”

But he hasn’t lost his sense of humour, adding: “Our rider is 10 times bigger than it was when we played a room at the Roundhouse earlier this year. But I know we don’t get the amount Oasis have. We’re Glaswegian so we plan to steal some of theirs if we run out. It was strange. I learned music through Oasis. Maybe without that we wouldn’t be here”

Oasis to cover Rolling Stones at BBC Electric Proms

Gallaghers to enlist a 50-piece choir

Oasis plan to rope in a 50-piece choir to cover a song by The Rolling Stones at BBC Electric Proms this weekend.

The Manchester rockers headline the Camden Roundhouse on Sunday (October 26) for the third year of the London-wide celebrations.

Traditionally rock bands have hooked up with classical musicians for the shows. Noel Gallagher has revealed that the band are planning to cover the Stones‘ classic ‘We Love You’ with the Crouch End Festival Chorus.

The guitarist told BBC 6Music that the plans sprang from aborted sessions for new album ‘Dig Out Your Soul’.

“Out of all the songs on the album, there’s two that didn’t make it that have got a 50 piece choir,” he said. “The original idea for this album was to record it with this choir in Abbey Road and for whatever reason it didn’t happen. When we got offered the Proms, we called them up and said, ‘I know we let you down last time but do you fancy getting up and doing a few tunes?’ I think they’re going to sing on a third of the set and we’re hoping to do ‘We Love You’.”

Gallagher did not reveal whether the abandoned album tracks will get an airing at the show.

Noel on choir choice and the Live Forever ‘Backlash’

Oasis have explained why they are drafting in a choir for their forthcoming BBC Electric Proms show.

Noel Gallagher said the band decided to join forces with the Crouch End Festival Chorus because the “BBC like to do something special” for the event.

The band had the option to team up with Kasabian, but decided to work with a choir instead.

The Manchester quintet are due to close the five day festival at the London Roundhouse on 26 October.

Explaining his reasons for picking the choir Noel said: “Instead of wheeling Tom (Meighan) and Serge (Pizzorno) onstage and going through some Rolling Stones tunes, I said, ‘When the crowd sing when I’m singing the big songs, you can never hear yourself sing anyway so why not take that and put that onstage?’.

“We thought let’s not have a gospel choir dressed in black doing that dance that they do. Just have an everyman choir of normal everyday people in their own clothes that back us.”

He also revealed that the band have axed Live Forever from the set of their UK tour, which kicks off at the Liverpool Echo Arena on Tuesday.

Noel Gallagher said: “Of course there’s going to be a massive backlash. But if we were to play every song the fans demanded we’d be like Bruce Springsteen playing over three and a half hours.”

He went on: “When I put the set together it was only our new drummer Chris (Sharrock) that noticed it.

“He said, ‘Are we not going to do Live Forever?’. I was like, ‘Do you know what? I hadn’t even noticed’.

“I was like, ‘Shall we do Live Forever?’ and everyone was like ‘I don’t know. Do you miss it? I don’t miss it’.

“One thing that annoys me about the live version of that is Liam refuses to sing the falsetto so it’s quite ludicrous that we’ve got away with that for 10 years. Anyway all the fans can go and play it afterwards.”

Despite leaving the famous track off, which is widely regarded as one of the ‘greatest indie anthems’ ever, Noel did confirm that the band would be playing a song from Be Here Now for the first time since the album’s tour in 1997.

The guitarist also said that he was recovering well after he was injured by a fan at the V Festival in Canada last month.

He said: “I’m totally on the mend. I’ve been shown by my doctor how to do these funny little wiggles.

“It’s called the camel and the cat where you get on all fours and you arch your back up.

“It’s funny the osteopath was going, ‘This one is called the camel and this one is called the cat’. I thought, ‘I might sample that’.

“Seriously though, I can’t wait. Liverpool will be the first night of the British tour and it’ll be quite exciting.”

Noel Gallagher was speaking to Radio 1′s Zane Lowe.

Oasis to headline final day of BBC Electric Proms

Oasis will be headlining and closing this year’s BBC Electric Proms. The band will play at The Roundhouse in London on Sunday 26th October.

The gig is set to be a special one with Oasis being accompanied by the Crouch End Festival Chorus.

Noel had this to say about the gig, “We are doing the Electric Proms, and we’re doing it with the Crouch End Choir as well… there’s 50 odd of them…because some of the songs on the album have got a 50 piece choir on them. So we’re gonna do a night at the Proms with that lot, it should be good actually… Ennio Morricone uses them for his spaghetti western stuff in England, so I’m already looking forward to that because I’ve never played the Roundhouse and I’ve never done the Proms.”

The Oasis performance will be broadcast on BBC Radio 1 from 9pm on 26th October, and on BBC2 at 22:45pm on the same day. Fans outside the UK can watch the performance for a week after the festival along with photos and interviews at www.bbc.co.uk/electricproms

Tickets will go on sale at 8.15am on Tuesday September 30th. For more info, go to www.bbc.co.uk/electricproms for details.

Noel Gallagher teams up with The Coral in London

Surprise Oasis appearance launches Electric Proms 07

The Coral opened the 2007 BBC Electric Proms tonight (October 24) by recruiting Noel Gallagher on guitar for their performance.

Playing the Roundhouse in London, the band got Oasis’ leader to join them on their song ‘In The Rain’.

Introducing Gallagher, Coral frontman James Skelly simply told the crowd “one of our mates is going to play on this one” as the Oasis man sauntered onstage and picked up his cherry red guitar.

After adding a solo to The Coral’s song, Gallagher simply waved to the crowd as he left the stage to a humble “ta” from Skelly and loud cheers from the Roundhouse.

The band then wrapped up their set with the likes of ‘Rebecca You’ and closer ‘She’s Got A Reason’.
