Rare Oasis ‘radio’ up for grabs

Paul Weller, Graham Coxon and Pete Doherty also in auction

A series of digital radios signed by a variety of rock stars, including Noel Gallagher, Graham Coxon, Jet and Editors are to be auctioned on-line to raise money for charity.

Pete Doherty, Manic Street Preachers, Queens Of The Stoneage and Paul Weller have also contributed to the fundraiser.

The auctions, which will take place in October on the Rockstar Radios website, will raise money for Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy, an organisation for providing music therapy for people throughout the UK.

Cancer concert raises a quarter of a million

Versus Cancer has raised a quarter of a million pounds to benefit cancer charities across the North of England.

Following the massively successful concert at Manchester’s MEN Arena on Friday March 30th this year, which saw unique performances from Noel Gallagher, Paul Weller, Ian Brown, The Charlatans and many more, The Great Northern Aid Trust, organisers of the Versus Cancer concerts, has announced its first money raise for 2007.

“It was an amazing night and we’re overwhelmed that so many great artists gave up their time for free to make it happen,” said Great Northern Aid Trust founder Andy Rourke. “Of course this is just one more step for us, with a DVD due out soon and more events in the pipeline, we hope to raise even more money for cancer charities.”

The biggest beneficiary from the concert will again be the Christie Hospital, a specialist cancer hospital in Manchester, who have received £100,000 for innovative cancer research.

The Largest Same Name Gathering.

Ende Oktober erscheint zudem der Oasis-Konzertfilm LORD DON’T SLOW ME DOWN auf DVD.

‘Lord Don’t Slow Me Down’

On 29th October Oasis release a brand new live DVD film.

What happens when a film maker follows one of the world’s biggest bands on a year long world tour? What happens when the film maker is granted unique access to that band, is present for the ups and downs, the moments of greatness and the periods of the same interview in 10 different languages in as many days? What happens when that band is Oasis, travelling across 26 countries on their biggest world tour to date playing to a total of over 2 million people?

The answer is ‘Lord Don’t Slow Me Down’, a double DVD set that not only gives you the definitive feature length documentary seen in selected cinemas last year, but also the option of voice over commentaries from the band, a Noel Gallagher Q & A session with fans from New York City, out takes from the film, and a second 90 minute disc capturing the band’s homecoming show at Manchester City’s Eastlands Stadium together with footage sent in by fans from around the world who attended that show. If you wanted to know what the members of Oasis make of their lives on tour and their audience, then the answers are on these two discs.

Directed by Baillie Walsh who has previously worked with Massive Attack (he made ‘Safe From Harm’), Spiritualised, New Order and Kylie’s Slow, and is now working on a film with Daniel Craig, this DVD set is a compendium of Oasis entertainment par excellence.

‘Lord Don’t Slow Me Down’ contents:

Disc One:

  • Feature length documentary tour film ‘Lord Don’t Slow Me Down’ in stereo and surround sound.
  • Bonus audio commentary – Noel, Liam, Andy and Gem guide you through the film with their recollections of the tour.
  • A Noel Gallagher Q&A session with fans runs alongside out-takes from the film.

Disc 2:

  • Oasis live at City of Manchester Stadium on 2nd July 2005 – sixteen classic tracks shot in HD with stereo and surround sound.
  • Disc 2 also features unique footage and pictures sent in by fans who attended the concert.

‘Lord Don’t Slow Me Down’ is released on 29th October 2007. Oasis are currently preparing a brand new album for release in 2008.

British acts step up the battle to make it big in Japan

It has been a typically volatile week in the Japanese music charts. Straight in at number one is the empress of J-pop herself, Ayumi Hamasaki, with her new single, Glitter, followed by four new, home-grown, entries to make up the top five.

If the bands making it big in Japan – such as Porno Graffiti and Orange Range – are unfamiliar to you, it is because there is little evidence of British acts making any impression in Japan’s Oricon charts, which are dominated by pubescent female singers and clean-cut boy bands.

But a delegation representing some of the biggest names in the independent British music scene is hoping to change all that. Led by the BPI, an umbrella organisation representing the British music industry, the heads of British record labels and companies offering expertise in everything from recording to marketing are going on a high-powered trade mission to Tokyo, backed by the British Council and the Government, where they will be banging the drum for British talent.

“Being big in Japan might have been a bit of a rock ‘n’ roll joke in the 1970s, but it was always a big and lucrative market,” said Matt Phillips of the BPI. “Today, there is a real anglophile tendency there and bands that have traction in the market tend to be quirky and different. That said, the Japanese market is one of the most complex in the world and one of the hardest to break into,” he added.

They will be hoping to build on the recent success of bands such as Oasis and Coldplay, who command loyal, if niche, followings.

Japan is a vital target for global music industry chiefs in the light of declining CD sales and the challenge posed by the digital music revolution. Behind the United States it is the second biggest market in the world and a key staging post for the mega-markets opening up across Asia, including China and its hundreds of millions of increasingly fashion-conscious young people.

Meanwhile, the British music scene is riding a wave of optimism, buoyed by marketable new talent from the Arctic Monkeys to Lily Allen and enjoying a much needed lift in sales volumes.

A quick glance at last weekend’s Fuji Rock festival reveals that even if it is not reflected in the charts, there is a huge appetite for British music in Japan. Among the acts playing to a sell-out audience of 100,000 fans were The Cure, Muse, the Chemical Brothers and Ash.

Among those taking part in the five-day BPI mission are Liam Walsh of Manchester’s Red Alert, who worked with Oasis and the Smiths, and Pete Gardiner of ZTT records.

Despite experiencing declining physical sales – down 9 per cent in the first half of this year to 129.6 million – the sheer scale of the Japanese market remains a massive lure.

Top-selling acts such as Mr Children have sold 50 million records, clocking up 26 consecutive number-one singles. EMI recently claimed that Utada Hikaru’s “Flavor of Life” had become the biggest-selling digital single of all time, with sales in excess of seven million.

The Japanese music industry is a past master in multi-platform marketing. “Flavor of Life” was first launched as a ringtone tied in with a television series. It then sold as a ring video and a blog tag – allowing fans to paste it to their personal blogs – before being released as a physical single, by which time it had already sold two million copies.

Top 10 selling UK acts in Japan

  • Oasis
  • Coldplay
  • Eric Clapton
  • Craig David
  • Chemical Brothers
  • Gorillaz
  • The Rolling Stones
  • Queen
  • Franz Ferdinand
  • Rooster
